The purpose of Nikos Kazantzakis Museum (MNK) is not only to preserve and exhibit its collections, but also to provide a museum experience which combines education with entertainment, placing the visitor at the center of interest. Among other things, a fundamental goal of the Museum is to enhance its educational role.

In order to achieve the above goal, the Educational Activities Department organizes a multifunctional program of activities, aimed at different age groups (adults, children, teenagers, families, and people with physical disabilities).

Activities like:

  • Educational programs for school groups
  • Educational program for families
  • Educational program for groups of people with physical disabilities
  • Workshops and seminars for children, teenagers, adults and people with physical disabilities
  • Training seminars for teachers
  • Seminars and lectures about the life and work of Nikos Kazantzakis
  • Cultural events of varying interest
  • Cooperation with other cultural and educational agencies

The MNK Educational Activities Department plans and implements educational programs for all the classes of the Primary and Secondary Education; the programs are designed according to the needs and interests of each age group, the capabilities and limitations of the space, the Interdisciplinary Unified Framework of Study Programs (DEPPS) and the Analytical Study Programs (APS). The programs elaborate specific topics, approaching different aspects of the Cretan writer’s life and work.

The initial goal is the familiarization of the children with the concept “museum” – the space, the content of the collections as well as the code of conduct within it – and, above all, with the personality and literary work of Nikos Kazantzakis. Through non-formal education methods, children get to know the cultural heritage of their country, they observe objects, exchange ideas and opinions, and they search and express themselves freely in their own unique way.

The mission of the MNK Educational Activities Department is to convert the visit to the Museum into a pleasant experience, adapted to the interests and abilities of the children, cultivating and enhancing their positive attitude towards Culture.

  • Participation in an educational program
  • Educational visit with guided tour
  • Simple educational visit

Find out more about MNK’s educational programs by selecting the school level you are interested in (Kindergarten & Elementary School or Lower Secondary School & Upper Secondary School).

In each educational program, its purpose and goals are mentioned so that teachers can choose the appropriate subject according to the age, interests and goals of the school class. Reservation of date and time of visit is essential.

For an educational visit with guided tour, you can be informed by phone or email by the Museum’s staff.

The guided tour lasts 30 minutes and the maximum number of participants in each tour cannot exceed 25 persons (children & teachers).

For a simple educational visit, you can be informed by phone or email by the Museum’s staff.

The simple educational visit includes a tour of the MNK Permanent Exhibition and it concerns groups which are not interested in a guided tour or in participation in an organized educational program.

The teacher coordinates and guides the school group throughout their visit, using the educational material he has designed, based on the chosen topic.

Useful information:

  • Educational programs take place every day, except Saturday and Sunday, from 9.00 to 15.00.
  • Educational visits take place every day from 9.00 to 15.00.
  • The financial participation for each child amounts to €1 for a simple visit, €2 for a visit with guided tour by the Museum staff and €3 for participation in an educational program.
  • Each school group (class) should be accompanied, at least, by two (2) teachers during the entire educational visit, who will be responsible for the orderly conduct of the visit.
  • The teachers can elaborate the educational material which they have designed and/or implement activities during their visit, after relevant information of the Museum staff.

For a better organization of your visit, we recommend that you inform the museum 1-2 days before you come, at telephone 2810 741 689 or at edu@kazantzaki.gr.

Organize your visit

Depending on the needs and interests of your group, choose the type of your visit (educational program, simple educational visit, or educational visit with guided tour), the topic of the program, as well as the desired day. Consider alternative options in case your first choice is not available.

Contact the Department of Educational Activities of Nikos Kazantzakis Museum (MNK) at least three weeks before the desired date of your visit, for your reservation. Since the booking flexibility is limited, please contact us as soon as possible.

Select the communication method that works best for you:

  • By phone at 2810 741 689
  • By email to edu@kazantzaki.gr

When you contact the Museum to organize your visit, it is particularly useful to have the following information available:

  • The educational program/ simple educational visit, or educational visit with guided tour
  • The children’s level/class and the number of participants (children & teachers)
  • Contact details of the school and of the teachers/persons accompanying the children
  • Special needs of a student (physical disabilities, learning disabilities, autism, etc.)

A confirmation phone call is always made by the MNK Educational Activities Department a few days before your organized visit. If you wish to cancel your visit for any reason, no charge shall be imposed. However, you must give at least a week’s notice in advance, so as not to deprive another school group of the visit.
