In order to make its collections accessible to vulnerable population groups, the Department of Educational Activities of Nikos Kazantzakis Museum (MNK) designed and implemented an exciting interactive tour of the Museum’s Permanent Exhibition.

On the occasion of the celebration of the International Museum Day 2022, the Special Lower Secondary School of Heraklion visited the Museum with its students, teachers and children’s escorts. They were welcomed by the Museum Educator, Chara Vavadaki, who accompanied and encouraged the participants to activate their bodies and senses throughout the tour in order to perceive the Museum’s exhibits and get to know the great Cretan author, Nikos Kazantzakis and his work.

During the interactive tour we traveled in time through black and white photos, we danced to the rhythm of the music, and our bodies were transformed into trees. We felt and smelled Nikos Kazantzakis’ favorite spices and we solved puzzles which led us to the heroes of his books.

Our concern was to make the Museum a place of socialization where everyone would feel free to express himself; this was successfully achieved.

The interactive tour lasted approximately 30 minutes, and it was attended by 62 children and 20 escorts who were divided in 4 groups. The information and sensory games were adapted to the needs of the participants in each group. The tour was followed by the screening of the animation video “A Restless Traveler” about the life and work of Nikos Kazantzakis, which lasted 18 minutes and the children loved it.

We wish to thank the Special Lower Secondary School of Heraklion, the children, the teachers and the children’s escorts for their very pleasant and beautiful attendance and for the honor to celebrate with us the International Museum Day 2022.
