Reach what you cannot

Classes:

Duration:

– Awareness –

Since May 2022, the Department of Educational Activities of Nikos Kazantzakis Museum (MNK) designed and implements the experience-related educational program “Reach what you cannot”. The program aims to raise awareness among the participants about visual impairment and the access of people with visual impairment to museum spaces, as well as to enhance empathy.

It is offered to all organized groups that wish to participate, regardless of the participants’ age, since it is adapted according to the needs and knowledge of each age group.

After a short tour of the Permanent Exhibition and following the tactile route, the participants discover the exhibits which they can touch. They understand in an experiential way what visual impairment is, as well as the ways by which people with visual impairment deal with the difficulties of everyday life.

They are divided into pairs and, guided by their senses – except for the sight – they tour the Museum and they understand how visually impaired people “see” inside the museum spaces. They touch copies of the author’s personal items, they read books and letters in large print and Braille writing system and they watch the inclusive video excerpt from the theatrical performance “Kapodistrias”, a play by Nikos Kazantzakis, which was staged at the National Theater in 1976.

Finally, they share their feelings and thoughts about what they learned and experienced at the Museum with the entire group, leading to a constructive discussion and reflection.
